Gambling games irrelevant questions

Postby Gushura В» 23.01.2020

The U. Supreme Court struck down a ban on sports betting this week, opening the possibility of states legalizing and regulating such gambling.

Gambling has been around for centuries and sports betting grew in the 20th century in the United States. Many turned to their bookies or Las Vegas to place wagers, but in recent years offshore websites have made it simple to place a bet. But sports betting is about to get a makeover as states look to make it legal stateside and reap the tax benefits.

While sports betting isn't legal in Connecticut, it soon could be which raises a number of questions. Let's take a look at what happened and what's next:. A: It was illegal in all states outside of Las Vegas. A federal law in effectively banned states from legalizing sports betting. And another federal law in cracked down on the use of offshore betting websites. Of course, people and companies were able to find loopholes and continued to find ways of placing bets.

Supreme Court Decision. A: Slow down. This might take some time, especially in Connecticut. Local lawmakers knew a decision was coming, but weren't quite sure what it would say. The decision allows states to legalize and regulate sports betting as they see fit. The Supreme Court decision also allows Congress to regulate sports gambling — something the NFL is hoping they will at least weigh in on — but if Congress doesn't, the states can do as they please.

Supreme Court is allowing states to regulate sports betting and Connecticut needs to act. That will take time though. Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation last year directing state regulators to start drawing up the rules and regulations should the Supreme Court rule as it did. But those regulators came back with questions.

Lawmakers had another chance to pass regulations, but didn't act and the legislative session ended in early May. Another session doesn't start until , but Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Democrats on Monday said they are ready to call a special session that would allow for debate and possible passage of the legalization of sports betting in Connecticut. A: Again, Connecticut will likely regulate what you can and can't bet on.

But expect for major sports — football, basketball, baseball, hockey, some auto racing, golf, combat sports — to all be allowed when it comes to betting. There are some possible issues, however. Major League Baseball, for example, has concerns about gambling on minor league baseball. They argue that betting on that level could lead to the compromising of games or be subject to influence due to the low pay of the minor leaguers. Sorry, Hartford Yard Goats diehards looking for a piece of action.

It's expected that the betting allowed will be on games, over-unders, teasers, some prop betting, and parlays. Plenty of discussion will continue about in-game betting, as well. Q: How can I place a bet? Again, it will be up to the states to decide that. They could limit gambling to off-track betting parlors or casinos, but it's expected to be a little easier than that. There's a good chance it will be as simple as opening an app on your phone or sitting in a local restaurant or bar and being able to place a wager.

Maybe it will be like grabbing a lotto ticket at the gas station, but that will be for the state to decide. A: Like the states, they see an opportunity.

Betting has been a part of sports for a long time, the leagues just want to make sure when it's legalized that it's done so with the integrity of the game intact. But there is ample opportunity for the leagues to make a cut.

As proposed, the leagues would take a fraction of 1 percent of all bets placed and pocket it. They issued a statement Monday stating they "will adjust to sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court.

UConn's senior associate athletic director Neal Eskin testified last month in front of a legislative committee that UConn and the NCAA have concerns about the integrity of sports should there be wagering, especially with amateur athletes being involved. Eskin also pointed to NCAA regulations that prevents championship games from being held in states where sports betting is legal. Connecticut, for example, will host opening rounds of the NCAA men's basketball tournament next year.

That rule, however, could be changed by the NCAA. The pro leagues will likely be able to take a cut of each wager made. The states will do the same and use it toward their budgets, counting the percentage as revenue. In Connecticut, it's expected to count for tens of millions in revenue each year. After that, the companies taking in bets will make plenty. That could mean casinos, the company that runs mobile apps or a restaurant should they be allowed to take bets. Beyond that, use your imagination to determine just how much advertising there will be out there, analysis in the media, new apps that will suggest bets and more.

A: This is another open-ended question, but there are a few possible answers in Connecticut. The Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes have already argued that they should oversee sports betting due to an agreement from the early s with the state. They remain a possibility, but some legal questions will have to be answered. If the state wants more control, the Connecticut Lottery would have oversight. But off-track betting companies will also make a play to handle the wagering.

Even then, sports betting could be months or maybe even a year away from being legal here.

Q: Are there sports I can and can't bet on once if it becomes legal? Sports leagues have also expressed concern over some prop betting. A: Good question. That remains unclear, but there are plenty of possibilities. Q: And the pro sports leagues are OK with this? Q: Who stands to profit in sports gambling? A: Just about everybody. Latest Sports.
